A joyful smile transformed Jasmine’s face. Oh, the relief!

“Is something funny?” asked Aunty Eva.

Jasmine hastily rearranged her expression. “No.” She glanced behind her. “I’ll just close these doors. It’s a bit draughty, isn’t it?”

“Can you never sit still?” asked Aunty Eva. “No wonder you find it hard to learn anything.”

The corner of the scarf was disappearing into Daisy’s mouth. It would do her no good to swallow it. Jasmine crept across the room towards her.

“What are you doing, Jasmine? Is there something wrong with you?”

Aunty Eva pushed back her chair. Daisy froze.

Jasmine seized her chance. Dropping to her knees, she reached for the rabbit.

“Aargh!” shrieked Aunty Eva, staring in horror at the furry creature crouched in the shadows.

Daisy bolted across the room. Jasmine lunged for her, toppling the jug from the table. A torrent of water poured into Aunty Eva’s lap.

“You clumsy child!” she cried, leaping from her chair. “Look what you’ve done!”

Then she saw her silk scarf sprawled on the floor, its corner damp and ragged. She screamed in horror.

“Chewed! Chewed to pieces! My best silk scarf!”

Daisy was cowering in the far corner of the room. Jasmine knew the best way to catch an animal was to cover it with a blanket. Before Aunty Eva could terrify poor Daisy any further, Jasmine snatched up the scarf and dropped it over her. She scooped up the trembling animal and held her close. Daisy’s heart was pounding.

“It’s all right, Daisy,” she murmured. “You’re safe now.”

“My clothes are completely ruined,” spat Aunty Eva, “and all you seem to care about is that disgusting creature.”

“Here’s your scarf,” said Jasmine. “Sorry about the chewed bit.”

Aunty Eva recoiled. “Are you mad?” Then her eye caught something else on the floor. “Ugh!” She stepped back in disgust. Jasmine followed her gaze and saw a little pile of rabbit droppings.
